The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest (first awarded in 1902) international scholarship program, enabling people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. It fully funds two years of graduate study at the University of Oxford, whether a taught Master's program or research degree. Every year, a cohort of thirty-two U.S. citizens or permanent residents receive Rhodes Scholarships.

Eligibility 

  • Note: This section is for those applying through the U.S. constituency, please refer to the section below if you are an international student/international undergraduate alumni

  • U.S. Citizen, permanent resident, or DACA recipient

  • At least 18 years of age and have not reached 24th birthday by October 1, 2024 

  • A 3.7 minimum GPA is required unless there are exceptional extenuating circumstances

    How to Apply:

    Applying for a Rhodes Scholarship is a multi-stage process involving summer advising and campus nomination for all enrolled students. 

    1. Complete the UK Awards Intent to Apply Form by May 31, 2024 to get enrolled in Brown’s UK Awards Google Classroom, which will provide more information on the application process and give you the opportunity to start drafting application materials 

    2. Explore Brown’s UK Awards Google Classroom and begin drafting application materials work. Once drafts are completed (by June 3) you will be paired with a fellowships advisor for one-on-one application support. 

    Complete the Rhodes Scholarship UFunds application, including:

    • Personal Statement (Note: Based on the rules of the Rhodes Trust, you cannot receive feedback on your personal statement
    • Academic Statement of Study
    • Activities List,  including extracurricular activities (such as community service, leadership, athletic participation) and academic involvements outside of the classroom such as research or publications, as well as other honors.
    • 5-8 letters of recommendation, at least three of which must be from Brown faculty. Letters of recommendation should be addressed to the Rhodes Committee, i.e. "Dear Rhodes Committee," and on letterhead. (Note: For the campus deadline, you only need to include three letters of recommendation and a list of the other 2-5 recommenders.)

    3. An official or unofficial Brown University transcript – and if applicable, transcripts from other institutions attended both domestically and abroad (Note: You only need to provide a transcript from a school(s) where you studied for an entire year.

    4. Register your recommenders in UFunds and submit your application through our UFunds online application system by the campus deadline of 11:59pm EST on July 8, 2024. Important Note: Do not submit your application to the Rhodes online application portal at this time, only UFunds.

    Brown’s Rhodes Review Committee meets in early July to review and nominate applicants. If you are nominated, you will:

    1. Continue to work one-on-one with your assigned fellowship advisor to discuss and revise your application, following committee feedback. For reference, a committee of faculty and staff reviews your application, provides feedback, and determines Brown's nominees
    2. Begin your official application and register your recommenders through the Rhodes online application system

    Submit your final application through Rhodes online application system by the national deadline (TBD October 2024)
